Welcome to Nicaragua Land of Lakes and Volcanoes! You arrive at Managua Airport and after customs procedures, a representative from Vapues Tours waits for you at the exit of the Airport to welcome you and provide the information you need for your trip. Then you are transferred to your hotel in the capital.

You are transferred to León, a Spanish-colonial town north of Managua.

The city of León is a cultural-historical attraction with an authentic atmosphere that gives visitors an opportunity to easily connect with the local population. The center with its colonial buildings, beautiful churches and the cathedral – which has been declared UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site – is only one of León’s many attractions.

Explore by foot the fascinating history of one of Nicaragua’s oldest and most influential cities. During this guided walk you visit revolutionary murals, baroque and neoclassical churches and an art museum displaying works by internationally renowned artists.

OPTIONAL TOUR (not included): Cerro Negro Volcano Boarding

You climb around 1 hour to the top, and appreciate a 360-degree panoramic view. Finish your hike with a 10 minute descent. This side only has volcanic sand, providing a great surface for sliding (boarding) downhill. This tour is also suitable for hikers; the boarding is optional.

Transfer to Granada, a beautiful colonial city situated near the Lake of Nicaragua. Along the way, you visit the Masaya volcano and Masaya handicraft market.

INCLUDED TOUR: Masaya Highlights (Masaya Volcano – Artisan Market)

The tour starts at Masaya Volcano National Park. Your driver brings you to the summit of the volcano, where you can peek inside the active crater. Your next stop is Masaya´s artisan market, where you can purchase quality Nicaraguan handicrafts. You have lunch (own expense) overlooking the impressive Apoyo Lagoon before you continue to your destination, Granada.

Situated at the foot of Mombacho volcano, Las Isletas consist of around 360 small forest-covered islands, formed by a volcanic eruption 20,000 years ago. You will be transferred to the harbor where you’ll meet the captain and board a motor boat. During the tour, your guide will point out the exotic flora and fauna, to later stop at one of the islands, and visit the San Pablo fort, built in the 18th century to protect Granada against English pirates. Beverages are included during the tour.

Transfer to San Jorge where you take the ferry to Isla de Ometepe. The island of Ometepe is situated in one of the world´s largest fresh water lakes, Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe has served as home to indigenous tribes and cultures for many centuries, of which the many pre-Columbian petroglyphs are silent witnesses.

INCLUDED TOUR: Charco Verde Walking Tour

The natural reserve Charco Verde is a protected area located between Ometepe´s two volcanoes. Many birds find shelter in this part of the island so birdwatching enthusiasts should keep an eye out! The hike is not strenuous and leads up a hill, from where you have nice views on the surroundings.

OPTIONAL TOUR (not included): Nature Tour

Start this adventurous tour of Ometepe’s natural treasures at Peña Inculta, a reserve where groups of white-faced and howler monkeys live. Other species to be found here are agoutis, squirrels, iguanas and tropical birds such as trogons, wrens and parrots. After hiking the reserve you visit the historical coffee hacienda Finca Magdalena, which was constructed in 1888. Here you get an insight into the process of organic coffee cultivation. You make a short hike to petroglyphs that lie on the premises. After the activities, you can have lunch in a restaurant overlooking the beach (lunch not included). Finally you go to Ojo de Agua, a natural pool, where you have some time to relax before heading back.

Transfer by ferry to San Jorge, and you continue to Laguna de Apoyo.

The beautiful lagoon, Laguna de Apoyo, is located between Granada and Masaya and was formed thousands of years ago, when a volcano exploded. In 1991, the lagoon was declared as a natural reserve. Laguna de Apoyo is said to have the cleanest water of all freshwater lakes in Nicaragua.
